Briefs for AS Media: Foundation Production

          Production Report [30 marks]

          The report records all stages of the production, including a technical account of decisions and

          revisions made and an evaluation of the success of the finished work. It should be up to 2000

          words in length and should cover the following areas:

          Part 1 The brief and research into similar media texts/target audiences

            HINT: Do your format research first, and that will help you devise a questionnaire for your audience research.

          Part 2 Planning the production

            HINT: This must include all your design decisions, which should be based closely on your Audience and Format research.

          Part 3 Constructing the production - technical decisions and revisions

            HINT: This should include the technical aspects of your prodcution. What DTP program you used; what Photo Manipulation program; What style; type and size fonts used, and why!

          Part 4 Evaluation of finished production

            HINT: This MUST include a wide range of media-specific terminology. See the main page for examples.

          Each part should be a MAXIMUM of 500 words.

          Brief 1: The Opening Sequence of a new thriller

          The opening sequence of a new thriller, including the titles, aimed at a 15 or 18 certificate audience (approximately two minutes duration).

          Brief 2: Television

          The opening sequence of a new children’s TV programme of any genre, to include titles, aimed at an audience within the range 5 to 12 year olds This may take the form of either the title sequence alone (provided there is a sufficient demonstration of technical expertise) or titles and opening of the programme combined.

          Brief 3: New Teenage Magazine

           

          Pages of a new, teenage magazine aimed at an audience of either or both sexes within the range 13 to 19 year olds, as follows: For candidates working individually: The front cover and at least one double page spread from the magazine. A minimum of three original images.

           

          NB: The following information may be included in your log

           

          Plan of Action:

           

          1. How would you describe your magazine?

           

          • Is it aimed at girls; at boys or a unisex audience?
          • Is it a weekly or a monthly?
          • Does it have an 'linking theme' - such as music; celebrity; fashion; sport etc?
          • How does the name symbolise the magazine ethos?

           

          You should now have some idea of your target audience.)

           

          2. How would you describe your audience?

          • Sex
          • Age
          • Lifestyle/degree of affluence. (Do your audience live in the inner city or the suburbs?)
          • Level of education
          • Socio-economic status - A, B1, B2, C, D, E (Upper, Upper Middle, Middle, Lower Middle, Working
          • Racial makeup

           

          3. Decide on your front cover - determine the following:

          • What image/photograph will you use and why?
          • What typefaces will you use and why?
          • How much additional information will you include and why?

           

          4. Decide on a focus for your double-page spread

           

          Brief 4: Print

           

          A series of advertisements using at least three original images from a campaign for health education or a charity. At least three advertisements in total.

          OR

          A games package cover in an appropriate format (PC, Playstation, Nintendo etc.) and a magazine advertisement for the release of a new game.

           

          NB: The following information may be included in your log if you are doing the advertising task:
